Smart Tagger Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 16, 2025
This policy applies to merchants who install the Smart Tagger app from the Shopify App Store, and describes how Light Green AI collects, uses, and stores data for the app.

1. Who This Policy Covers
This policy applies to merchants who install the Smart Tagger app (“the app”) from the Shopify App Store, and describes how the app collects, uses, and stores data.
As a merchant, you are also the operator of your own Shopify store. Your store’s customers interact with the app indirectly — the app’s storefront tracker observes their behavior on your store. This policy explains what that means in practice for both you and your customers.
2. What Data the App Collects
Merchant account data
- Your store’s Shopify domain
- An access token issued by Shopify for your store
- The OAuth scopes you approved
- Session expiry time
- Shopify user ID, name, email, and store-owner status from the login flow
Stored in the app database and used only to authenticate requests from your store to the app.
Plan & configuration
- Selected plan tier (Free, Growth, Pro, or Scale)
- Backend configuration settings you save
Used to enforce plan limits and route requests correctly.
Once the app is installed and the tracker is active on your storefront, it records behavioral events generated by visitors to your store:
| Event | Data recorded |
|---|---|
| Product viewed | Anonymous browser ID, product ID, variant ID, timestamp |
| Product added to cart | Anonymous browser ID, product ID, variant ID, quantity, timestamp |
| Checkout started | Anonymous browser ID, product ID, variant ID, quantity per line item, timestamp |
| Checkout completed (order) | Anonymous browser ID, product ID, variant ID, quantity, order ID, total price, currency, timestamp |
| Collection viewed | Anonymous browser ID, collection ID, timestamp |
| Search submitted | Anonymous browser ID, search query text, timestamp |
Each event also records your store’s Shopify domain and, if the shopper is logged in, their Shopify customer ID.
The app does not record shopper names, email addresses, home addresses, phone numbers, payment card details, or any other personally identifiable information beyond the fields listed above. The anonymous browser ID is assigned by Shopify’s customer events system — it is not created or controlled by Smart Tagger.
3. How Data Is Used
Generate product tags
Evaluate your tagging rules and write qualifying tags back to your Shopify catalog.
Compute product metrics
Calculate views, orders, cart adds, conversion rate, and click-through rate from storefront events.
Operate your plan
Enforce plan limits and apply the configuration settings you save in the app.
Authenticate access
Use session and token data only to authenticate requests from your store to the app.
No secondary use
Event data is not used for advertising, profiling, resale, or any purpose other than your tagging rules.
4. Shopify Permissions We Request
When you install Smart Tagger, you approve the following Shopify access scopes. The app does not request and cannot access customer email addresses, payment information, shipping addresses, or financial reports.
| Scope | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
| read_products | To read your product catalog when evaluating tagging rules |
| write_products | To apply and remove product tags on qualifying products |
| read_orders | To compute order-based metrics used in rules (e.g. orders per product) |
| read_analytics | To access store-level analytics data used in metric calculations |
| write_pixels | To install the storefront behavioral tracker on your store |
| read_customer_events | To receive storefront events (views, cart adds, etc.) from the tracker |
Storefront event data is retained for a period that depends on your plan. Merchant session data is retained for as long as the app is installed on your store.
| Plan | Data retention |
|---|---|
| Free | 7 days |
| Growth | 14 days |
| Pro | 90 days |
| Scale | 1 year |
When you uninstall Smart Tagger, the app receives an app/uninstalled webhook from Shopify. Upon receiving this webhook, all session records associated with your store are deleted from the app’s database.
Product tags that the app already applied to your products in Shopify are not automatically removed on uninstall. They remain as standard Shopify product tags until you choose to delete them manually.
You are the data controller for the behavioral data collected from your store’s visitors. The app acts as a data processor on your behalf.
You are responsible for disclosing to your customers, in your own store’s privacy policy, that behavioral tracking is active on your storefront and what it is used for.
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of the data the app holds about your store by contacting us. Upon a verified deletion request, we will remove your store’s data from our systems.
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the date at the top of this document. Continued use of the app after changes are published constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
